Vibrators are by far the most popular sex toys on the market. They come in so many different shapes and sizes that it can be confusing to choose the right one. How do you decide which one to try first? And why do women rate them so highly?
The clitoris is the main spot to vibrate
The majority of women do not orgasm from internal penetration with a vibrator, but by holding it against their clitoris. Of course, it’s also highly pleasurable to insert a vibe while vibrating the clitoris simultaneously, but the clit remains the focus of the good vibrations.

Vibrators are designed and shaped according to the spot they are meant to stimulate.
Choose a vibrator depending on what features you want
They are selected according to:
- the part of the body they are designed to vibrate
- their range of vibration speeds and rhythms
- the material they are made out of.
We discuss each of these below.
What body part you want to vibrate
There are basically three types of vibes according to the type of stimulation:
Types of vibrators

External vibrators
These stimulate the clitoris and external genitalia. They tend to be straight or small and don’t resemble a penis.

Internal/G-spot + clitoris vibrators
These are for simultaneous internal and external stimulation. They usually have a straight or curved shaft for inserting and then a clit attachment, often with two separate motors.

Why are women buying vibrators like hot cakes?
Most vibrators are designed for women because women tend to take much longer than men to reach orgasm – and the vibration effect is such an exquisite sensation for the genitals that for most, it’s a sure-fire way to reach an orgasm.
Vibrators are fantastic for women because they help us reach an orgasm far quicker and more easily. Many women learn to orgasm for the first time using a vibrator, after manual stimulation and penetrative sex fail to take them to a climax. A lot of women also learn to orgasm more easily while using one. The orgasms that result from a vibrator can also be much more intense.
The feeling of vibration on a woman’s clitoris and labia (vaginal lips) is intense and highly arousing, with many women being able to reach an orgasm within seconds or minutes of holding a vibe against their external genitals, compared with the more traditional 20-30 minutes of foreplay and manual stimulation by their lover.
Or you can use it to get you aroused and then continue to be stimulated by your partner using more traditional methods. So in case you were wondering whether it’s okay to introduce your vibe to your partner or to keep it for secret solo play, we say – share your toys.
Our advice if you’re choosing your first vibrator
If you are choosing only one, go for a small vibe for clitoral play with a range of vibration speeds. Play with it all over to discover what feels enjoyable.
If you are going for two toys, choose a dual vibrator – and consider investing in one that is curved to massage the G-spot. Dual vibes can be quite powerful and may be a bit intimidating for first-timers, especially the larger penis-shaped ones, but there are plenty of smaller, less realistic ones that are feminine, fun and non-intimidating. And the dual stimulation is well worth the purchase!
We are all individual and it’s impossible to say what each person will enjoy, so we advise you to try a range of vibrators, explore freely, and find out what sensations and what combinations register a 9 on your Richter scale.
How strong the vibration is and whether it pulses
The stronger the vibration of your toy, the quicker it will take you to orgasm. When you start out with your first toy, it’s probably a good idea to get one that offers multiple vibration speeds – low, medium and high – so that you can start off gently. Try the low speed first. As you get more aroused, try switching it to a more powerful speed, and as you near a climax, turn it on to full speed.
Some vibrators also offer different rhythms and pulses. This can be pleasant because instead of providing ongoing vibration, they give your genitals a short breather between each burst of vibration. If you use ongoing vibration, after a while the spot tends to become less sensitive to sensation, so it’s good to vary the stimulation.
The dual vibes often have two motors – one to control the part that’s inserted and another for the clit stimulator arm – which can be turned on one at a time or simultaneously, with varying speeds.
What material it is made from
Generally, the harder the material the toy is made from, the more readily it transmits the vibration sensation. This is why hard plastic vibes are a good option. The softer, more life-like jelly vibes tend to be warmer to the touch and closer to the feel of a penis, which is why women often prefer them if using them internally.
When materials are dangerous
A word of warning – many sex toys are made of materials that are not body-safe and may be cancer causing. If you’re buying a soft jelly vibe, choose one that specifies that it is phthalate free – click here to read more about the harmful effects of phthalates.
Bacterial growth is less likely to flourish on certain materials, such as glass and ABS plastic. Medical grade silicone is also very hygienic and a good choice for your vibe.
Vibrators are great for men too
The vibrating sensation is highly pleasurable for men too, especially on their erogenous zones, such as nipples (see vibrating nipple clamps), scrotum, penis shaft and head, perineum and anus. As for women, vibrators are shaped differently depending on where and how they are going to be used. As well as the vibrators that are popular with women, guys can choose from vibrating sleeves, penis rings and anal toys.
How to choose a vibrator for a guy
For external stimulation, a straight, smooth, hard vibe is ideal – the same as for a woman. The harder the material, the stronger the vibration tends to be. A multi-speed vibe is a good idea as it allows him to choose the level of intensity according to how it feels.
For anal stimulation, a vibe that has a flared base is essential so that it cannot get lost up his rectum by mistake. For massaging the prostate (which can be felt through the walls of the rectum), use a curved vibe with a larger base, for the same reason. (See our article on how to keep your vibrator hygienically clean.)
