Male sexual preferences may be based purely on arousal

Is women’s sexuality more flexible than men’s? A US-based study in 2004 found that men watching porn were aroused in line with their stated sexual preferences – heterosexual men were aroused by clips showing women involved in sex acts while homosexual men were turned on by watching male-male sex. Women, however, were turned on by female-female and male-female sex acts. Heterosexual men were also more aroused by films showing two women having sex than that of a man and woman having sex.

The evidence suggests that women’s sexual preferences may not be as strongly linked to their sexual arousal as men’s and that female sexuality may generally be more flexible than male sexuality. A woman’s sexuality may be more influenced by external factors such as the desire to start and maintain a romantic relationship than by genital sexual arousal alone.

The report proposes that heterosexual women who are aroused by female-female erotica need not question their sexual identity as a result, as most heterosexual women are aroused by these stimuli. In contrast, it suggested that heterosexual men who are substantially aroused by male-male erotica would be justified in reconsidering their sexual identity.

The research assumes that the men participating did not consciously manipulate their sexual responses. However, earlier research has shown that some men are able to control their genital arousal. The report concedes that some men may consciously inhibit their sexual arousal – for instance, self-declared heterosexual men may consciously not become aroused when viewing male-male sex acts – but this was unlikely in this study.
